Bulletins

416 did it. So did 905. 604 joined them both. And 514 is next.

In 2001, they switched over to 10 digit dialing. Ontario's 416 and 905 regions along with British Columbia's 604 region made the transition to 10 digit dialing in 2001. All three regions added new area codes that now co-exist with the current area codes. In 2004 a new area code will be added to Montreal's 514 region.

Why? We're growing faster. As a result of the rapid growth, technology demands are higher than ever. To meet the increased demand for telecommunications services, like cell phone numbers, fax numbers, and pager numbers, new area codes were added - giving you a whole new pool of available numbers.

What is it and why you need to know

10 digit dialing is simple. Instead of dialing seven digits, you need to include the area code when making local telephone calls, sending or receiving faxes, or connecting to the Internet. Many pieces of equipment also need to be reprogrammed to include the area code.
