The growth of email spam globally has had a significant impact on all email users. This nuisance wastes time and resources. All
stream is aware of this issue and is taking steps to reduce this irritant.
In the past few weeks Allstream has introduced strong anti-spam measures to reduce the amount of inbound email spam to our cust
omers. These steps have been very effective in addressing this issue.
We are now focusing our efforts on reducing outbound spam and our first step is to close off certain computer “ports&rdqu
o; within our email servers. Ports are typically used to map data to a particular process running on a computer. In certain cases,
these ports can be used by spammers to broadcast their email or infect other computers with spam-producing viruses. By closing cer
tain unused ports, we will reduce this ability.
Please note: while this action will reduce outbound spam, it does not eliminate the need for anti-virus software, firewalls or
other security systems. Allstream strongly encourages it’s customers to ensure their Internet security systems are up-
to-date and operational.
Please be advised that Allstream will be blocking selected ports, effective close of business November 1, 2007.
We do not anticipate any negative impact to our email users. If you have any questions, please send your queries to portclose@allstream.net.
