Overview:
This document will assist you in deciphering the traffic logs or "hit logs"
for your website. If you have a Business Services website, there are a few
options of viewing and managing your traffic logs of your website.
Getting Started:
There are programs availaible from the internet that will assist in analysing
these logs, and turn the raw data into recognizable charts and graphs.
One such program is WebTrends, available at http://www.webtrends.com/
Another such program is Analog, available at http://mirror.sit.wisc.edu/analog/
Usability:
The traffic logs for your web site are located in your root ftp
directory. A logs directory should be visible as soon as you log
into your website directory. Within the logs directory, are files called
access_log, some with dates at the end. The most current file is
called access_log with NO date at the end.
The server will store logs for the past one month. Normally you
would FTP and save a copy of the log you want to analyse to your
local hard drive, and then open the log file with one of the log
analysers. However, you will want to read the readme.txt that is
included with the particular log analyser you choose to ensure
success.
