Connecting to Allstream's Business Internet Service with Windows NT4

(Dial-Up Networking configuration)

In order to connect to the Internet, you need to configure your Dial-Up Networking under Windows NT4. This document will guide you through this configuration process.

You will need the following pieces of information before continuing:

  • Dial-up access number - this is the number your modem dials to connect to the Internet. To obtain your local dialup number, please visit our POP info page at: http://www.allstream.com/bin/popinfo/
  • Your dial-up username - the username that you received for your Internet account.
  • Your dial-up password - the password that you received for your Internet account.

A properly installed modem is also required to connect to the Internet. Furthermore, during the configuration procedure, your computer may ask for the Windows NT4 installation CD-ROM. This depends on the configuration of your PC. Please make sure that you have the original Windows NT installation CD-ROM nearby.

  1. Verifying Remote Access Service
On your Windows task bar, click on Start, select Settings and open the Control Panel. In the Control Panel, double-click on Network and select the Services tab. You should be seeing the window below.

Make sure that you have Remote Access Service installed.

If Remote Access Service is missing, click on Add and select Remote Access Service for installation. You will be prompted for the Windows NT installation CD. It is also important that your modem be configured for RAS. To do so, click on the properties tab and add your modem for dial out only.

  1. Dial-Up Networking configuration
On your Windows desktop double-click on My Computer, then on Dial-Up Networking and click on the New button. You should see the following window:

Enter "Allstream" for the Entry name and enter your local dial-up access number. If you do not know your local dial-up number, please visit our POP info page at: http://www.allstream.com/bin/popinfo/.

(Attention: The phone number shown in the illustration above is an example for the Toronto local calling area.)

Then proceed to the Server tab.

Make sure that the only option selected is TCP/IP, and that the Dial-up server type is PPP. Then click on the button TCP/IP Settings.

Please select Specify name server addresses and enter 207.181.101.4 for the primary, and 207.181.101.5 for the secondary DNS.

Once you are finished, just click on OK and select the Script tab.

Make sure that None is selected and continue by selecting the Security tab.

Please check the option Accept any authentication including clear text. And select the X25 tab afterwards.

Next to the Network option, None should be selected. Click on OK to finish.

Your computer is now configured to connect to the Internet. Click on the Dial button. You will be prompted for your user name and password.

In the User name field, please enter your username (username@allstream.net). Then, enter your password in the field labeled Password. Make sure the Domain field is empty. Click on the OK button and your modem will dial out and connect to the Internet.

Once connected, just open your browser, Internet Explorer or Netscape, and you are ready to explore the Web. You may want to start with the Allstream web site. In the address field (location field in Netscape) type www.allstream.com and press Enter (or Return) on your keyboard. Your browser will take you to our site.

You are online!

To disconnect, double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon in My Computer and click on the button Hang up.

If you are having problems with this configuration, please feel free to call our Business Technical Support department at 1-888-655-7670.
