Connecting to Allstream's Business Internet Service with Windows 95/98

(Dial-Up Networking configuration)

In order to connect to the Internet, you need to configure your Dial-Up Networking under Windows 95/98. This document will guide you through this configuration process.

You will need the following pieces of information before continuing:

  • Dial-up access number - this is the number your modem dials to connect to the Internet. To obtain your local dial-up number, please visit our POP info page at: http://www.allstream.com/bin/popinfo/
  • Your dial-up username - the username that you received for your Internet account.
  • Your dial-up password - the password that you received for your Internet account

A properly installed modem is also required to connect to the Internet. Furthermore, during the configuration procedure, your computer may ask for the Windows 95/98 installation CD-ROM. This depends on the configuration of your PC. Please make sure that you have the original Windows installation CD-ROM nearby.

  1. Verifying Network Components
On your Windows task bar, click on Start, select Settings and open the Control Panel. In the Control Panel, double-click on Network and you should be seeing the window below.

Make sure that the following network components are installed:

  • Dial-Up Adapter
  • TCP/IP or TCP/IP -- Dial-Up Adapter

If one is missing, please follow the installation instruction in section 2. If both are present, please skip to section 3.

  1. Installing the Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP

    Adding the Dial-Up Adapter
If your Dial-Up Adapter is missing in the Network window, click on Add, then double-click on Adapter, select Microsoft from the list of manufacturers, select the Dial-Up Adapter and click on the button OK and OK again. The computer will then ask you to restart. It may also ask you to insert the Windows 95/98 installation CD-ROM in order to copy some files.

    Adding TCP/IP
If your TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter is missing in the Network window, click on Add, double-click Protocol, select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers, select TCP/IP for the Network Protocol, and click on the button OK and OK again. The computer will then ask you to restart. It may also ask you to insert the Windows 95/98 installation CD-ROM in order to copy some files.

  2. Dial-Up Networking installation
After your computer has restarted click on My Computer. In My Computer you should have a Dial-Up Networking. If so, please skip to section 4. Otherwise, if Dial-Up Networking is missing in your My Computer please continue with these instructions to install it. Double-click on the Control Panel and double-click on Add/Remove Programs. Click on Windows Setup and double-click on Communications. Click on the check box beside Dial-Up Networking and click on the button OK and OK again. At this stage, your computer may ask you for the Windows 95/98 installation CD-ROM in order to copy the necessary files. Restart your computer when the installation is finished.
