Connecting to Allstream's Business Internet Service with Mac OS 8.0 or higher

In order to connect to the Internet trough the Allstream Business Service, you need to configure your Macintosh. This document will guide you through this configuration process.

You will need the following pieces of information before continuing:

  • Dial-up access number - this is the number your modem dials to connect to the Internet. To obtain your local dial-up number, please visit our POP info page at: http://www.allstream.com/bin/popinfo

  • Your dial-up username - the username that you received for your dial-up Internet account.
  • Your dial-up password - the password that you received for your dial-up Internet account.

Please make sure that you are using Mac OS 8.0 or higher. You can verify this by going into the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of your screen and select About this Computer.

  1. Select your modem
In the Apple menu (upper left corner of your screen), select Control Panels and then Modem. You should see the graphic below.

Please make sure that the proper modem is selected and that Sound - On is checked.

If you do not know what modem you are using, please consult your manual or inquire with your vendor.

  1. Configuring TCP/IP
In the Apple menu (upper left corner of your screen) select Control Panels and then TCP/IP.

Please configure the following:

  • Connect via: PPP
  • Configure: Using PPP Server
  • Name server address:
    207.181.101.4
    207.181.101.5

When closing this window, save the changes.

  1. Configuring Remote Access
In the Apple menu select Control Panels and then Remote Access. (Attention: In Mac OS 8.0 the control panel is called PPP instead of Remote Access. From Mac OS 8.1 on, the control panel was named Remote Access.)

Please configure the following:

  • Name: username@allstream.net
  • Password: your password
  • Save password: check this option if you want your computer to memorize your password
  • Number: your local dial-up access number

If you do not know your local dial-up number, please visit our POP info page at: http://www.allstream.com/bin/popinfo/.

(Attention: The phone number shown in the illustration above is an example for the Toronto local calling area.)

Click on the Connect button and your modem will dial out and connect to the Internet. Once connected, just open your browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape) and you are ready to explore the Web. You may want to start with the Allstream web site. In the address field (location field in Netscape) type www.allstream.com and hit Enter (or Return) on your keyboard. Your browser will take you to our site.

You are online!

To disconnect, open Remote Access in the Control Panels and click on the Disconnect button.

  1. Troubleshooting
  • The Modem, TCP/IP or Remote Access control panels are missing! Please open your Extension Manager in the Control Panels. Make sure that Modem, TCP/IP and Remote Access (PPP for Mac OS 8.0) are activated, i.e. that they are checked. Please note that changes in the Extension Manager take only effect after restarting your computer.
  • When opening TCP/IP or Remote Access, I get an error message telling me that certain libraries are missing or that Open Transport is not loaded. Open your Extension Manager and make sure that all Open Transport and OpenTpt libraries are checked (activated). Then restart your computer.

If you are having problems with this configuration, please feel free to call our Business Technical Support department at 1-888-655-7670.
