How to publish your Web site with Frontpage 98/2000

What "Publishing You Web Site" Means?

Publishing your Web site means making the site visible on the Web for all to see. For your site to be accessible on the Web, you must store all the site's files and folders on another computer called a Web Server. Although Frontpage comes with it's own functional Personal Web Server, this server is really meant just for your own personal use - so you can test the Web sites you create in Frontpage. To publish your site, you need to transfer your Web site to a more powerful Web server that's connected to the Internet 24 hours per day. This type of server is called a Dedicated Web server. For Allstream customers, this is where your domain is hosted.

Publishing your Web to Allstream's Frontpage Server

Before you begin the publishing process, you need to make sure your domain is hosted on one of our Frontpage servers and you need to know your eventual URL. This means you need to know the address visitors will type into their browsers to view your site once the site is available on the Web. The URL may look something like http://www.allstream.com. If you're not sure what your URL should be, contact Allstream's business repair toll-free number at 1-866-282-0111.

To Publish your Web site for the first time, follow these steps:

  1. In the Explorer, open the Web site that you want to publish.
  2. Click the Publish Frontpage Web button.
The Publish Frontpage Web Dialog box appears
(If the Publish dialog box appears instead of the Publish Frontpage Web dialog box, then you have already attempted to publish a Web site using Frontpage. For instructions on how to use the Publish dialog box, Click Here)
  3. Type the Web site's destination URL in the list box titled Please specify the location to which you want to publish your Frontpage web.

The information you enter in this dialog box should be your Domain Name URL -- http://www.allstream.com

    Click OK.

The publish Frontpage Web dialog box closes. A pause will occur as Frontpage contacts the dedicated Web server. In a moment, the Name and Password Required dialog box will appear.

  4. In the Name and Password text boxes, enter your Allstream Domain Administrator Username and Password and then click OK.

When you have input your Name and Password correctly, the dialog box will close and Frontpage will begin to copy all your Web site files to the dedicated Web server. Depending on the size of your Web site and the speed at which you are connected to the Internet, this process may take a few minutes. (Watch the Status bar for messages explaining what's going on). After the work is done, the Status bar displays the message Published to followed by the destination URL.

Congratulations, your site is now visible to the world!

Using the publish command to update and keep your Web site fresh.

To update your site, you make changes on the local copy of your Web site and publish the Web site again. If you want to update the site's changed pages, a single-button click will do the trick. To update the entire site (including the pages that haven't changed), or to publish the site to a different location, you will need to follow a few more steps.

To update your site's changes, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Web site you want to update and make whatever changes you want.
  2. In the Explorer, click the Publish button.

The Name and Password dialog box will appear. Input your Allstream Domain Administrator Username and Password and click OK.

Depending on the permissions you've set to your Web site, the Name and Password dialog box may appear again, this time requesting your Frontpage administrator name and password. If this occurs, type in the administrator name and password you supplied when you installed Frontpage and click OK.

The dialog box will close, and Frontpage copies the changed pages to the Web server. Your site is now updated!

You can use Frontpage in conjunction with Internet Explorer (Version 3 or later) to quickly edit the live version of your site. To do so, browse to your Web site and, in the Internet Explorer toolbar, click the Edit button. Frontpage launches and will prompt you for your username and password. After you enter your Allstream Domain Administrator Username and Password, the Web site opens in the Frontpage Explorer, and the selected page opens in the Editor. Make whatever changes you want and then save the page. The changes are immediately visible on the web.
