You can connect using MacTCP with MacPPP, or OPEN TRANSPORT with
MacPPP or FREE PPP. We recommend using a PPP connection
when connecting to Allstream.
You DO need the following software already on your computer in order
to connect to the internet: MacTCP, or Open Transport TCP/IP, MacPPP, Open
Transport PPP, or FreePPP and a web browser of your choice (ie. Netscape)
Setting Up MacPPP:
1. Go to Control Panels (from the Apple menu) and open Config PPP.
Set the port name to Modem Port. Set the Idle Timeout: to 20 minutes. Set
the Echo Interval to 20 seconds. In the next section Terminal Window and
Quiet Mode should be unchecked, and the Hangup on Close should be checked.
2. Click on Config Select New and enter your "username"
PPP Server Name: your "username"
Port Speed: 38400 (if your modem is 14,400) or 115 000 (if your modem
is a 28,800 or higher)
Flow Control: CTS & RTS (DTR)
Tone Dial/Pulse Dial check what your phone line is (usually tone)
Phone Num: Allstream access number local to you.
Modem init: AT&F (if this does not work please consult your modem manual
for additional modem initialization strings)

3. Select Authentication:
For AUTH.ID: username@allstream.net
Password: (your password)

Remember to type in your Allstream email address or you will not
be able to log in. For example, if your username is joeuser then put joeuser@allstream.net
in the AUTH. ID box.
Click the okay button when finished entering your username and password.
The configuration window will be displayed. Click on the DONE button. The
Config PPP will now be displayed. MacPPP should now be correctly installed.
MACTCP Configuration:
If you have a Mac with System Software 7.5.3 or higher, with OPEN TRANSPORT,
you will have a slightly different configuration for TCP. Please refer
to the end of the MAC TCP Configuration for instruction.
MacTCP is typically installed with your system software. Make certain that
you have version 1.1 or above. Updates can be obtained from Apple Computer.
Enter MacTCP (in the Control Panel), select the PPP icon and click on More.
You do not need to provide an IP address as it will be provided by the
Allstream server each time you connect.
1. Select Server, under Obtain Address
2. Choose Class C for the IP Address.
3. Fill in the Domain Name Server (DNS) information with two entries. The
first one should have allstream.com. The second and third lines should just
have a period "." The IP addresses are 207.181.101.4 and on the
second line, 207.181.101.4 again, and on the third line 207.181.101.5.
Make sure the default button is checked to the left of the first addresses.
4. Your MacTCP screen should now look like this:
5. Close the MacTCP window.
