Six Key Lessons For Taking The
Lead In The Green Revolution
"We're not protecting
the environment for the sake of the fishes and the birds.
We're protecting it for our own sake, because we
recognize that nature is the infrastructure of our
communities."
- Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

1. The global economy of the twenty-first century will be
driven by sustainable green enterprises. Pollution is
antithetical to a healthy free market, and climate change
- the greatest of all pollution problems
- now compels businesses to clean up. Green
isn't radical, it's essential
to the health of the economy, and the companies that succeed in
this new, greener world will be those that understand that all
businesses are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the environment.
Long-run profitability will accrue only to companies that achieve
sustainable prosperity.
2. Green investment is infrastructure investment. Going
green isn't just good for the planet,
it's good for business. Green practices provide
direct benefits to business efficiency and competitiveness, and a
company with poor green infrastructure is as disadvantaged as one
with inferior telecommunications or outdated equipment.
3. There is gold in green. The green economy is a dynamic
economy, and the companies that have taken the lead in this shift
are already feasting on the fruit that's fallen
to the ground, not even needing yet to reach for the low-hanging
stuff. The greatest business opportunities on the horizon are in
the green economy.
4. Business logic will guide the shift to green business.
The coming green economy will be driven not by invasive policy but
by sound business thinking. As the global economy shifts from
punishing bad (and sometimes even good) behaviour to rewarding only
the best behaviour, companies that have gone green will reap
rewards simply for being smart, efficient and light-footed.
5. The best-informed workforces make the smartest
decisions. Climate change and other environmental crises are
changing the playing field rapidly, and the mediascape of today
only amplifies the confusion. A well-informed workforce is
essential to a healthy business in this environment, and effective
communications have never been more important.
6. There is real, lasting value in moral leadership. Much
as the economy is merely a subset of the environment, every
business is a potential community leader and every employee a
community member. The environmental crises of our time have never
been more urgent nor more dire, and the need for moral leadership
never greater. Businesses have a leading role to play in the
broader shift to sustainability, and the ones that show moral
leadership will be making an infrastructure investment that will
pay back for generations.
